John Wick is probably the most popular action movie of the last decade. Keanu Reeves as a badass action star makes you feel the adrenaline rush of sorts. However, what makes this franchise levitate over the others in the genre is the soul of the story. Rather than being solely an action flick, this story pulls much more than that. Also, the writers and the director give a special effort on making an emotional and realistic tale.
After the pandemic, like lots of big productions, The John Wick franchise is also getting a push back. After three superhit installments, the fourth one is set to hit the theatres in 2022.
The universe of John Wick has got great acting, great direction, and some massive action setups. The whole folklore surrounding the out-of-work mercenary getting back into the business. John Wick (Reeves) is out to seek revenge on the people who took something he loved from him. It’s a beautifully simple base for an action movie and when they get convoluted, they don’t do it well. However, the makers of John Wick don’t fall for that cliche trap. Let things be how they are in their perfect form.
Here’s a quick recap of what happened in the last three installments:-
I. JOHN WICK (2014)
Keanu Reeve is John Wick is a deadly and unstoppable hit-man, and it shows. “John Wick” is compact and to the point, but so dynamic and wonderful. At 1 hour and 36 minutes running time, there is never a moment that lets you leave your seat in what may be one of the best action films of the year.
Besides the mercenary and his fight skills, the film does set up a very interesting world, thanks to all the other little easter eggs and characters it brings in. There is an organized system of those on the other side of the law, operating and exchanging “gold coins”. All while staying at bases such as “The Continental” hotel; which definitely allows lots of content for sequels and spin-offs.
Also, John Wick takes a hell of a lot of beating in this film. Most of the time he’s being hulk, smashing people, and instead of acting as some unstoppable god of death, he just seems like a guy who’s a veteran hit-man.
II. JOHN WICK: CHAPTER 2 (2017)
While some people felt disappointed by this ambitious second installment, most people felt the same Keanu high off this. This movie remains serious, whilst exceptionally combining dry humor with extreme graphic and violent imagery. It’s more fast-paced than the first but all in good favor, Reeves gives it his all and adds a lot to this franchise.
For the fans of realism and nuance, there’s no place in this franchise. However, for those who want a clean cut superb mercenary who happens to hold his perfect suit while slashing through bad guys, this is it.
John Wick: Chapter 2 is a worthy successor of the first movie, it expands the universe, giving you insight into the interior of the world of assassins. All that while managing to maintain the insanity of action sequences from the first movie. Also, it’s clear at the end of the movie that Mr.Wick isn’t Retiring anytime soon.
III. JOHN WICK: CHAPTER 3 – PARABELLUM (2019)
The latest movie from the franchise is one of the most polarising action movies in recent times. Fans of the franchise get what they expect and pay their tickets for. However, the boring people, aka critics, will get on the back of the movie to call it cliche and too smooth. That is irrelevant for those who want to see a super incredible killing machine just caress his way through loads of punching bags.
Reeves as Wick is on the run after putting down a member of the international assassins’ guild and carries a $14 million bounty over on his head. Also, he is the target of hitmen and really attractive women through his journey. The movie turns out to present John Wick as a wee bit more vulnerable than the last two movies, but nothing to worry about, he’ll kill his way out of it.
The main arenas set for the major fights were especially vibrant and unique. The fact that the director’s vision is so blended with Keanu and his co-actors is very effective on the traceability of the film.
Chad Stahelski will be helming the fourth installment like the first three. However, there’s a massive challenge at hand with making the new movie feel fresh. Even the most ardent fans of the series would start to tire off with the same style. All in All, we all want to see Keanu Reeves reinvent himself as John Wick and keep enjoying the slaughter series.
