A six-part TV series has been announced for the big screen adaption of the popular novel. The story plot is the same as that depicted in the book by Vikram Seth. The story revolves around four families in the post-Independence era in India. The central character is Lata, whose mother decides to find a “suitable boy” for Lata’s marriage. The story highlights many social, national, and political issues faced during that era.

After the first episode’s broadcasting, people have poured in various reviews about the series. There have been extraordinary reviews stating that this is the best period drama film on BBC TV to date. On the other hand, the ardent readers of the book feel that 6 chapters won’t be able to do justice to this lengthy yet brilliant novel.

Is the Series as good as the Book?

Firstly, Mira Nair’s beautiful direction, and Andrew’s traditional adaption of the novel is worth appreciating. The vastness in the characters portrayed by the talented actors also gives it an upper hand. The stunning locations and pompous sets, shooted in various Indian cities are also good.

The cast speaks English most of the time, with some pinch of Urdu and Hindi. The bright costumes, the background music, and screenplay create a marvel of storytelling most of the British viewers will have never seen before.
