GKIDS announced the cancellation of the theoretical screening of Studio 4°C’s anime film of Daisuke Igarashi’s Children of the Sea (Kaijū no Kodomo) manga. Earlier the release was scheduled for August.
The reason for cancellation, is, of course, the coronavirus pandemic. The company wants its fans to be safe and they hope to screen the film in theatres in the future. Earlier, the screening was going to happen on August 11 and 13 through Fathom Events.
Children Of The Sea: Release Date
The film’s release is still set for September 1. GKIDS and Shout! The factory will premiere the movie on September 1. The film will be made available on Blu-ray Disc and DVD.
All home video releases will offer bonus footages and clips. An interview with director Ayumu Watanabe and CGI director Kenichiro Akimoto will feature in the bonus footage. Also, composer Joe Hisaishi’s interview can also be seen in the bonus videos. The Blu-ray Disc and DVD combo pack release will also include the exclusive “Turep – Looking for Children of the Sea” pseudo-documentary.
GKIDS describes the film’s story:
Ruka saw a ghost in the water at the aquarium when he was a child. Her father used to work at the aquarium. Now, she wants to know the truth behind the aquarium. She meets two mysterious boys, Umi and Sora. The boys were raised by dugongs and hear the same strange calls from the sea as she does. The kids get tangled up in solving the sudden mysterious disappearance of the ocean’s fish. The trio later uncovers cosmic connections that will change them forever.
Children of the Sea opened released in Japan in 2019. The movie ranked #5 in its opening weekend and made a box-office collection of 316,860,800 yen (about US$2.95 million). Viz Media published the English version of the manga.
