Coming to America: Amazon Studios Takes Up Eddie Murphy’s Next From Paramount

Before arriving to the American audiences, Coming to America is making one more connection. The long-anticipated sequel to the classic by Eddie Murphy is in the process of being sold to the Amazon Studios by the distributor, Paramount Pictures, in a deal which is roughly worth $125 million. The sources added that the expected streaming premiere date is December 18.

The final details of the project are being hammered out, and it is said by the sources that including two complex consumer marketing tie-ins with the MacDonalds and Crown Royal, the whiskey brand, which are expected to transfer over to the Amazon Studios with the film.

Murphy, who has produced and even starred in the film, has to give his blessing. The sale is said to be a priority for Jennifer Salke, the Amazon Studios chief, who has been on the hunt for more of the commercial fare with the recent acquisition of the sequel to the Borat and another acquisition of the Paramount in the Tom Clancy adaptation, Without Remorse, which stars Michael B. Jordan.

Also, we would like to tell you that the studio has also picked up Regina King’s One Night in Miami, which is most expected to be a contender for Oscar.

Paramount Pictures had been continuously exploring numerous options in the recent weeks for the tentative Christmas Day release of the movie in the light of the ongoing closures of the movie theatres and the countless blockbuster movies changing their dates of release. It also includes selling the rights in-house at the owner, Viacom’s streamer CBS All Access. Other streaming service platforms also gave an eye to the film.

This project is one of the several projects that has been sold by the Paramount Pictures to the streamers this year. It includes Trial of the Chicago 7 of Aaron Sorkin and the action-comedy Lovebirds. Both of them went to the online streaming service providing platform, Netflix. Also, the studio sold Without Remores of Tom Clancy to the streaming platform, Amazon Prime Video.

The first part of Coming to America was directed by John Landis in the year 1988 and is saw Murphy as the charming African prince Akeem, who traveled to New York City to escape an arranged marriage. The movie managed to gross nearly $300 million at the worldwide box office.
