‘Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind‘ is an American romantic drama film with a pinch of science fiction added to its story. Ever since its release in 2004, the movie has got positive reviews both from critics and the audience. Read on to know the Plot and Ending of the movie.
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind: Movie Plot
The lead characters of the movie are Joel played by Jim Carrey and Clementine by Kate Winslet. They both feel the urge to travel to Montauk one day, and end up meeting each other. They immediately bond with each other and share good compatibility.
Albeit, they did not know they had already been in a relationship for two years with each other. After a fight, Clementine had hired the New York City firm Lacuna. They managed to erase all her memories of their relationship using some strange neurological process. Following her, Joel also decides to undergo the partly memory erase procedure.
However, during the process, he keeps the last memory of Clem intact with him, the first they met.
The Ending Explained
Just when they start to bond with each other, they realize that all of this has already happened in the past. They are triggered by the questions of uncertainty. If it did not go well earlier in the past, How would it make a difference now? Because after all, Joel and Clem were the same persons with their innate habits and preferences.
“I can’t see anything that I don’t like about you,” says Joel, and Clementine tells him, “But you will! But you will. You know, you will think of things. And I’ll get bored with you and feel trapped because that’s what happens to me.” Again, they both need therapy. But in the face of this, Joel just says, “Okay.”
Two interpretations of the ‘OKAY’ scene
The movie ‘Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind’ ends with this okay scene. The ending’s interpretation is left up to the audience. Clem clearly says if they decide to be together, there are high chances that they both go down the same road once again. It may result in a passionate but crappy relationship with the same fights and loaded arguments.
Joel’s ‘Okay’ reply can either mean he comprehends what she fears and hence says okay. On the other hand, it can also mean that even after all this, he is still willing to take risks and just be with the women he is in love with right now. Everyone deserves a second chance and maybe destiny made their paths crossed for the greater good.
The movie is very relatable to the audience and hence connects a strong chord with them. Love is a magical experience but not a fairytale ride. When things have gone really bad, is it still worthy to give the person a second chance? Or the ultimate trauma of repeating the same mistakes and getting more hurt can behold you back?
However, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind movie’s positive ending is far more anticipated by the fans. Joel and Clem both agree to give it a chance and value the brighter moments during the trip rather than the darkness at the end of the tunnel.
