Will Smith breaks into tears while paying tribute to his late co-star Jamey Avery on the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air Reunion.
The special reunion of Fresh Prince of Bel-Air released on HBO Max on 18th November 2020. The cast had reunited to look back onto their time in the show. Recalling the memories led to the shedding of tears, tears of joy, and sadness.
James Avery, best known for playing Uncle Phil, passed away in 2013 due to some complications in his open-heart surgery. The cast remembers him and how he inspired Will and others to put their best foot forward while acting. Will gets teary while describing how his strict-but-loving Uncle Phil, pushed him to be the best, and use him “to elevate your craft”.
Fresh Prince Lessons:
Smith, 52, recalled filming one of the show’s most memorable episodes with Avery, in which Will’s father reappears after 14 years away from his son.
“I remember in one of my favorite and most famous scenes from Fresh Prince – the father episode – James Avery was this six-foot-four, 300-pound stage-trained Shakespearean beast and I’m the little rapper from Philly under him and I wanted him to think I was good,” Smith said.
Will wanted him to be proud of him when we come to that scene. He wanted to deliver and perfect the scene so bad but unluckily flubbed his lines. He messed it up in front of the audience and his mind snapped. With the scene that they did, it ended up being in the episode. Will ends up falling into Avery’s arms at the end of the scene; James is holding him and slowly whispers into his ears, ‘Now that’s acting.”
Will says some beautiful lines that go as ‘It’s like people don’t even know when they’re shaping you and forming you and crafting you. He knew.’
