Hair Love is a 2019 American animated short film. The writer and director of the movie is an Oscar-winner Matthew A. Cherry. The short film centered around the relationship between an African-American father, his daughter Zuri. Most importantly it revolved around “the most daunting task a father will ever come across – doing his daughter’s hair for the first time.”
In this paragraph, we’ll tell you about the plotline of the short film. Seven-year-old Zuri attempts to style her thick, kinky hair while watching an instructional video narrated by her mother (Issa Rae). Her father, Stephen, attempts to help her and, after much effort, styles her hair. They enter a hospital room where her mother is wearing a scarf and sitting in a wheelchair. Her mother removes her scarf to reveal that her head is completely bald, as a result of chemotherapy for cancer. The family members hug each other and return home together.
Sequel Of Short Film: Young Love
Now, the short film is set to become a full series at HBO Max. A 12-episode, 2D-animated series is coming soon. The new series is called Young Love. The producer of the series is Sony Pictures Animation, Blue Key Entertainment, and Lion Forge Animation.
Moreover, it will focus on the same family introduced in Hair Love — parents Stephen and Angela, and their daughter Zuri, along with their pet cat Rocky. It will tackle not only hair, but will also juggle developing a career with taking care of a family, and prevalent social issues.
“I am beyond excited to continue telling the story of Stephen, Angela, and Zuri and further explore the family dynamics of a young Black millennial family,” Cherry, the showrunner said in a statement. “Couldn’t ask for better partners in Sony Pictures Animation and HBO Max in helping us get Young Love out to the world.”
“Hair Love struck a chord that is still resonating deeply with audiences of all ages,” said HBO Max Original Animation SVP Billy Wee. “Matthew and Sony Animation’s creative voices are a welcomed addition to the HBO Max family and we can’t wait to bring this joyous story to the world.”
