Microsoft teams to stop working on IE, Microsoft 365 apps support will end August 2021.

Video calling/ Meeting app, Microsoft teams will no longer be accessible in Internet Explorer 11. Microsoft announced this in a blog post in August this year, saying, “Beginning November 30, 2020, the Microsoft Teams web app will no longer support IE 11.” Other Microsoft 365 apps and services will no longer support IE 11 after August 17, 2021. The company is taking this step as it looks to shift to the new Microsoft Edge browser. “We are committed to helping make this transition as smooth as possible,” Microsoft said. 

Did Microsoft make any other changes?

Microsoft Teams web app is the first to stop functionality on the browser. In what seems to be an attempt to migrate users over to the newer Microsoft Edge. The US-based company is also ending support for the Microsoft Edge Legacy desktop app on March 9, 2021. They have upgraded most of its customers to the new Microsoft Edge browser. Microsoft also mentioned that the Microsoft Edge Legacy desktop app would not have any new security updates post March. 

“While we know this change will be difficult for some customers, we believe that customers will get the most out of Microsoft 365 when using the new Microsoft Edge. We are committed to helping make this transition as smooth as possible,” said Microsoft.

The post also further stated that newer browsers like the new Microsoft Edge would make for better and more innovative online experiences.

“We believe that Microsoft 365 subscribers, in both consumer and commercial contexts, will be well served with this change through faster and more responsive web access to greater sets of features in everyday toolsets like Outlook, Teams, SharePoint, and more”, read the post.

Microsoft Edge

The company released Microsoft Edge for the first time about two years ago. Company went ahead to rebuild it on the Chromium open-source engine and now comes pre-installed with Windows 10 version 20H2 and beyond. Microsoft is all in for promoting the use of Microsoft Edge for the Microsoft 365. The company promises faster and more responsive web access with more features in toolsets like Outlook, Teams, SharePoint.
