Monster Hunter Film: A New Teaser Video Revealed

The Monster Hunter franchise is a series of fantasy-themed action role-playing video games that started with the game of the same name for Playstation 2. It was released in 2004. Titles have been released across a variety of platforms, including personal computers, home console, portable consoles, and mobile devices. A film based on the series has been in conception since 2012 by director Paul W. S. Anderson. The film was formally announced by Capcom in October 2018, with production starting that month with Impact Pictures and Constantin Film.

Paul W. S. Anderson is the main creative mind behind 1995’s Mortal Kombat and the  Six Resident Evil Films. He is well versed in the proper way to bring video games to the big screen for the greatest impact. And, Now Anderson is bringing the exotic world of Capcom’s global gaming blockbuster, Monster Hunter, into theaters next spring.

The film will be based on a  United Nations task force falling into an alternate dimension where Hunters fight off monsters, and the force join the Hunters to prevent monsters from returning through the portal to Earth. The film will star Milla JovovichRon PerlmanT.I. HarrisDiego Boneta, and Tony Jaa.

Release Date

Monster Hunter film is tentatively slated to open in the United States on December 30, 2020. Sony Pictures Entertainment and TOHO had planned to open the film in North America and Japan, respectively, on September 4.

The companies then delayed the film until tentatively next year due to the new coronavirus disease (COVID-19). Until a teaser video debuted last week revealing the December debut, Sony Pictures had been targeting April 23, 2021, for the North American opening date.

About Monster Hunter Short Trailer

The “Paul W.S. Anderson | Mortal Kombat, Resident Evil, and a sneak peek at Monster Hunter” panel at the New York Comic Con Metaverse digital event revealed a new short trailer on Saturday for the live-action film of  CAPCOM’s Monster Hunter game franchise.

Paul W.S. Anderson reveals the short trailer at 42:08 in the below panel video. The video features a Greater Rathalos.

In the panel, Anderson talks about how he discovered the franchise 12 years ago and approached CAPCOM about making a movie about the franchise 10 years ago. He said he is approaching the film not just as a filmmaker, but as a “long-term player and fan” of the franchise. Anderson also reveals in the interview that a Palico, named “Meowscular Chef,” will appear in the movie as the Admiral’s sidekick.
