A new report suggests that Knuckles will be playing a role in the Sonic sequel, scheduled to begin production in early summer. The sequel to Sonic the Hedgehog will be reportedly featuring a fan-favorite character from the video game franchise.
Knuckles the Red Echidna will be playing a supporting role in Sonic the Hedgehog 2, according to The Illuminerdi, which will start production in May 2021.
While the details are scarce, it seems that the part will be more than just a cameo. Furthermore, he will have the ability to glide and climb walls, similar to his video game skills.
Paramount Pictures is currently looking to cast a voice actor who is “serious in nature, but still gullible at times.” The studio is also looking to launch a supporting character named Randall, who will only interact with the film’s human characters and an A-list star for a quick cameo.
Sonic 2 | What The Role Of Knuckles In The Sequel
Big-name such as Samuel L. Jackson and Chris Rock have been thrown around, but nothing has been finalized. Paramount Pictures and Sega Sammy made an announcement that they were developing a sequel to the super hit film adaptation of the popular video game franchise back in May.
Jeff Fowler is also expected to return to direct, and Pat Casey and Josh Miller will write the script. Releasing in the month of February of this year, Sonic the Hedgehog follows the Blue Blur as he fights to stop Dr. Robotnik from taking over the world.
The film teased a sequel in the mid-credits sequence, which features Tails’ appearance, one of Sonic’s iconic sidekicks. The movie opened to $70 million over the four-day President’s Day weekend, earning the largest opening for a video game-based film.
It ended up with $306.8 million worldwide off an $80-$90 million budget. The first Sonic game, Sonic the Hedgehog, was released in 1991 for the Sega Genesis to compete with Nintendo’s Mario.
The franchise started as a series of platformers but eventually spun out racing, fighting, party, and sports games.
The Sonic characters even crossed over with Mario in the Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games franchise. At the same time, Sonic appears as a playable character in Super Smash Bros. Written by Pat Casey and Josh Miller, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is directed by Jeff Fowler. The film will hit theaters on April 8, 2022.
