“Therefore I Am” Music Video:
Five-time GRAMMY Award-winning artist Billie Eilish has released her new single titled “Therefore I Am” on November 12, 2020. The track comes along with an official music video which also directed by the 18-year-old. The song is shot in an abandoned Glendale Galleria shopping mall, a familiar stomping-ground for Billie during in her early teen years.
“I’m very curious to see what people get from it and also what they feel when they hear it… It’s a little mean. I love it,” Billie said. “It was very fun to complete. It was fun to record… feels like me… If I think about it from an outside perspective, this one I’d be satisfied if I was a fan.”
Fans and journalists have already started to try and interpret the meaning behind the song’s lyrics. The title is likely familiar to people as it is originally the translation of the famous quote given by philosopher René Descartes, “I think therefore I am” which in Latin is written as “cogito, ergo sum”.
The statement means that “in knowing one’s own existence through the act of thought, this is proof of the reality of one’s own mind.” While this is a short analysis of a very foundational philosophical idea under the Western philosophy, it has been used here, or so it seems, to do something of the opposite.
