The Weeknd accuses the recording academy of ‘corruption’ after getting no nominations in Grammy, the chief responds.
Grammy chief Harvey Mason Jr responded to R&B star The Weeknd after he accused the academy of being corrupted. Chief was also surprised to know that the singer did not receive any nominations. He also subtly noted that the number of artists competing for recognition at the “only peer-voted music awards” is much more than nominations. The Weeknd has one of the biggest selling albums this year named “After Hours” however, the artist did not receive any names in the 63rd Grammy Awards.
Artist expresses disappointment
Weeknd expected all the names in the major award categories similar to what he received at MTV VMA’s ad AMA’s 2020. He went on to Instagram to express the accusations. He wrote:
“The Grammys remain corrupt. You owe me, my fans and the industry transparency.”
Initially, the chief also confirmed the artist’s performance in the Grammy’s and Super Bowl. However, things went downhill real quick.
Chief’s words on Abel/ The Weeknd
“Congratulations to today’s Grammy nominees, who have earned their peers’ recognition for their incredible work. There were a record number of submissions in this unusual and competitive year,” the Grammy chief said. “We understand that The Weeknd is disappointed at not being nominated. I was surprised and can empathize with what he’s feeling. His music this year was excellent, and his contributions to the music community and broader world are worthy of everyone’s admiration…” he said.
“Unfortunately, every year, there are fewer nominations than the number of deserving artists. But as the only peer-voted music award, we will continue to recognize and celebrate excellence in music while shining a light on the many amazing artists that make up our global community.
“To be clear, voting in all categories ended well before production announced The Weeknd’s performance at the Super Bowl. So in no way could it have affected the nomination process,” the Grammy head said.
The Nominations procedure
Grammy has a pretty tight procedure for nominations. It is a multi-step process with multiple committees filtering numerous artists. Veteran music professionals make their decisions based on a shortlist handed down from a screening committee. They work out on thousands of submissions and choose the worthy ones.
