Imelda Staunton leads the brand new cast as Queen Elizabeth II as we head into Peter Morgan’s royal biopic’s fifth installment. Also, there are questions in the minds of when related to The Crown Season 5; whether it will happen or not? Let’s talk about it.
With the reign of Olivia Colman as Queen Elizabeth II officially and finally over with the release of the fourth season of The Crown, many fans will be wondering when we’re likely to see Peter Morgan‘s fictionalized version of the Royal Family return to our screens and what season five is expected to cover.
The upcoming series will be witnessed moving into the years the 1990s, with Imelda Staunton leading a stellar cast as they do re-create some of the most significant moments in the history of the monarchy.
From the very public decline of the relationship of Prince Charles and Princess Diana to the fire at Windsor Castle, the fifth season of the series is likely to cover the Queen’s “annus horriblis,” which witnessed Diana’s tell-all Panorama interview and also three failed marriages.
As to how much the show will be creeping towards the present day, Peter Morgan, the creator of the series, recently teased that the sixth and final season of the series will end in the mid-Noughties, which clearly means that season five could explore the front half of the 90’s up until Princess Diana died in the year 1997.
The Crown Season 5 Details
While Staunton will now be taking over as The Queen, while Jonathan Pryce and Lesley Manville become Prince Philip and Princess Margaret, respectively, Morgan recently revealed that he was “toying” with an idea of bringing Colman’s Queen back to the show for a cameo.
So it is possible that we have not seen the last of the Oscar-winning actress in the drama. The Crown season five is going to be released in the year 2022, with filming not expected to start until June 2021.
Meanwhile, the production on the sixth and final season is expected to begin in 2022.
The two years gap between seasons is not unprecedented and is not down to the coronavirus pandemic; the show took a production hiatus when the cast was last changed for season three.
In October 2020, Imelda Staunton told This Morning that The Crown season five would begin filming in July 2021.
Earlier in the year, Staunton revealed that her research for the role is ongoing, but she anticipates filming on season five being delayed by the coronavirus pandemic and the fact that so many TV productions have been on pause.
